Apistogramma breitbinden is primarily found in the upper Rio Negro region, specifically around São Gabriel da Cachoeira on the Rio Uaupés in northwestern Brazil. They have also been collected from the middle and upper Orinoco basin near Puerto Ayacucho in western Venezuela and the Rio Inirida system in eastern Colombia.
These dwarf cichlids inhabit slower-moving tributaries, backwaters, and creeks where fallen leaf litter collects, creating a natural habitat for them.
